Best Place to Advertise Your Self-Published Book

These are notes taken from an interview I did with a self publishing millionaire on some of the best places to advertise..

Imagine my delight...

The first time I advertised my book in a tabloid I sold 700 orders. I made enough money to put myself in business - thousands of dollars the very first time.

If you have fresh ideas or knowledge to share, you have a saleable product. Offered to the right market, you can launch your career as an author. There are plenty of advertising choices out there. Some are good, some not appropriate to your market. Your success depends on your ability to choose wisely.

How do you know which are best for you? Read on...

After my initial success, I was so impressed by my results I expanded my advertising into other media.

In a small way I went into...at that time it was called The National Tattler. It's like the National Enquirer. The book didn't do well there.

It was a different kind of an audience; a lot less sophisticated. Plus they were not the type to respond to the type of copy I was using. And so, for a few years I was pretty much stuck with The Spotlight.

I tried other papers. I tried daily newspaper and it fell flat. Did I lose money? I rarely lose money.

And you won't either, once you understand the principles of direct marketing. You're not going to lose unless you really do something stupid. If you try to get cute in the headline, you're going to get killed.

Although some publications are more successful than others, I cover my costs in most of my tests. You really have to.

A couple of things that are important if I were to advise you about running a space ad and you're selling information product would be in your packaging, your mailing.

I learned a lot in that process that would made my life easier when I handled the orders, the fulfillment, the shipping, and everything.

Now I do things a lot differently. Back then I did everything myself. It was very simple. It was a small booklet. You just go to an office supply store and buy envelopes and go to the post office and buy stamps.

At that time, we were using typewriters and adhesive labels. You just type the label up. You slap it on the envelope. Stick the book in the envelope.

It was a catalog envelope. It couldn't be easier. I mailed it first class, with stamps.

It wasn't until later that I started to get involved with more books that I had written and self published.

Eventually your fulfillment starts to get a little more sophisticated. You really don't have to do it yourself. Hopefully you hire people to take care of that for you.

Your ideas, insights and teachings have value. If you're quick-witted or entertaining, artistic or creative, you can package it into a book. By doing a little groundwork and direct marketing you can reach a wider audience and bring in scads of cash.

Book Review - The Tipping Point

"The Tipping Point" by Malcolm Gladwell which was published by Little, brown and company is one of the best books that I have read in a decade.  The author who is a writer for The New Yorker magazine also wrote "Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking".

One of the things that captivated me with this book was the excellent writing style which is combined with good research and interesting stories to support the thesis.

Mr. Gladwell challenges the reader to think about things that make a difference when it comes to expertise.  He describes modern-day phenomena that explain what he terms "laws" that affect the way that our social world behaves.  At the same time, he links these ideas to the way that people's thinking is changed when is comes to seeing products or disseminating ideas because of specific occurrences that might be overlooked which become the "tipping point" that throws a commonplace event into a strong fad or marketing event.

Perhaps the author's words best describe this book. He states "The Tipping Point" is the biography of an idea, and the idea is very simple.  It is that the best way to understand the emergence of fashion trends, the ebb and flow of crime waves, or for that matter, the transformation of unknown books into bestsellers, or the rise of teenage smoking, or the phenomena of word of mouth, or any number of the other mysterious changes that mark everyday life is to think of them as epidemics.  Ideas and product and messages and behaviors spread just like viruses do."

When you decide to start reading this book, I hope you will not have other plans because you will not want to put it down until you come to the very last page.

Breakthrough Novel - How Do You Make it to the Bestsellers Lists?

Breakthrough novels are rare, indeed. Especially when you think about how many books are published each year and that 98 % of them fail at being noticed. Did you ever wonder how or why some books make it and some don't? In other words, what creates a breakthrough novel?

What is a breakthrough anyway? It implies that something breaks through a major barrier, reaches some status or position above the main. It also implies that a difficult or rare feat has been achieved.

So how does one break through with their book? There are essentially two things that must be created. But before I say what they are, it's vitally important to realize that breakthrough novels are not happenstance. They are made, or caused, to make the bestsellers lists.

This may sound a little bit like tipping the scales and so forth, but that would be like saying if you worked hard for the Olympics, you'd be cheating to win. That of course would also have to include the absurd perspective that "things should only happen by chance, fate or luck" - nonsense!

First of all, that would be a life of total effect: what ever happens, happens because it was supposed to happen, bah, blah, blah, excuse, blame, it's alright that I'm not flourishing, blah, blah, blah. Come on! Give me and everyone else a break!!

If somebody throws a lit cigarette in a trash can and a fire starts, was it meant to be? The "effect" person might actually let the building burn down. The rest of us...we'd grab a cup of water and dowse it out, and that's that - cause. Someone caused the fire and we caused it to go out.

So how does one cause a breakthrough novel?

1) By having an exceptionally well-written book
2) By effective marketing.

You may have seen your fair share of poorly-written bestsellers in your day, but realize that they don't stand the test of time...they're short lived. They succeed for as long as time and lots of marketing dollars are poured into it.

The first question to ask yourself is, "Do I want to spend a lot of time and energy promoting a half baked novel or do I want to spend my energy on the best book it could possibly be?"

Of course you want to spend your beans on a book that will sell for years to come, maybe even outlive yourself and many generations.

Okay, so the very important step #1 for creating a breakthrough novel is: GET A VERY WELL-WRITTEN BOOK. This means either you, being a great book writer, write a masterpiece. Or, if you're not one, then you hire a great book writer to write your masterpiece.

Once step #1 is accomplished, even better would be WHILE it's being written, step #2 in creating a breakthrough novel - marketing your book - is worked on. But how, you say? Well, this is but an article. Effective book marketing involves a number of actions and a great deal of know-how.

That said, I will put you in the right direction as we move forward. For now, for today, create that breakthrough novel by getting a great book started. One thing is for certain: you can't do any marketing until you have a product to sell.

Discover the Best Brands of Foam Padding in the Market

Foam padding is known formally as the insulator that seals off the sections of your home that have small holes and gaps. Hence, you prevent any air that you do not need to enter. For example, during summer months, you need air-conditioning units. To save energy, you need to cover up those holes. Regardless of the size, whether it is a small cavity or a large gap, you can definitely make use of the tool in preventing hot air to enter or escape. Those winter nights that are freezing will no longer need the sheep wool clothes to keep you warm. With the right sealant that will prevent heat from escaping, you can now cozy up in your bed and have that restful sleep.

Foam padding comes in various materials. However, the most common that you can find in the market that acts as air barriers are made up of urethane. It is a type of substance that when exposed to air hardens and expands in a sense. Any section or portion of your residence can make use of the froth covering. Your roof rafter, wall dividers or any floor tiles will benefit from the protective device. Thus, you get this radiant friendly oxygen that will keep the warm air to thrive and make your abode fresh and comfortable.

The 3M 78 Polystyrene Foam Spray Adhesive is one of the brands that people prefer to buy in the market. At only $16.90 per canister, you get this handi spray that is fast drying and has varied spray widths. Technically, it weighs around 1.4 pounds and is one of the bestsellers in the online market. Another brand that is making waves in the market is the Dow Chemical Co 157906 Great Stuff Sealant. This model is considered as a high-value tool that is perfect for those big gaps and spaces that need to be covered. This foam padding is a permanent weather tight seal that will definitely make your home airtight. Hence, you get protected from drafts and insect infestation. This brand is one of the highest quality materials that are made of urethane foams.

Comparing Brick and Mortar to Online Retail - Proceed at Your Own Risk

Pity the poor retailer.

Vandalism.

Gobs of costly employees. Shoplifting. Huge shipping costs. Rent, utilities and facilities expenses. Oh yes, and sales stink.

So the last thing the modern proprietor needs is to be compared to a storeeee innnn spaceeee... But Brandweek did just that when it published "Why Can't Shopping Be More Like Online Shopping?" (or "Why Retailers Should Be Acting More Webby" online*) - a full-page editorial lamenting why oh why "regular" stores can't be more like online ones. Why bricks and mortar establishments aren't taking "advantage" of all the stuff that "online competitors have been perfecting" for years.

Hmm. Stores are far from perfect (my grocery store was renovated recently, and now I can't find a darn thing) but - come on.

Let's take the points raised in this article one by one and give a quick, incomplete-but-adequate response regarding the practicality/reasonableness of each:

* Product reviews. Where would a retailer put product reviews in a store where everyone would see them? Who would be responsible for keeping them current? Who would be responsible for mending/replacing them if they were damaged or defaced? How could a chain retailer ensure 100% compliance across its network?

* Bestsellers. Pretty much "ditto" to the above.

* Search. This one's just mean. Stores have been experimenting with kiosks for years with mixed results. Brands that want to experiment with shelf displays typically need to send their own people in to do it (expensive, time-consuming). The writer refers to a test that Campbell's tried years ago. It alphabetized its soups in-store. Result? They sold less soup. And store maps? Who can read one of those and where the heck is it?

* Affinity. Since 10 out of 10 shoppers who walk through the door are looking for different items and would be lost if some products where re-grouped with others just because someone thought it should be that way. And if we're talking about posting suggestions near products, see above for Reviews and Bestsellers.

* Brevity. The writer wishes there was a "convenience aisle" for check-out. There is (15 items or less please). But when a store's busy, you're going to wait behind a bunch of people. When was the last time you had to wait behind a bunch of people while checking out online?

And with this last point, I tip my hand: the presence and need for multiple (indeed, masses of) human shoppers and workers to make a store location on dry land work is the reason that my local grocer will never be like FreshDirect. It's not just money and profits that keep live retailers from taking on characteristics of Web shopping, as the article hypothesizes. Some things, for all intents and purposes, are simply not able to be done well in the real world.

But if we ask why online shopping isn't more like regular shopping, the good reason is also human interaction: a person that helps you figure out whether that sweater is black or navy. A greeter at the door who says "Hello" and thanks you for coming. A saleswoman who knows just by looking at you what size will work, and will give you an opinion on an outfit if you ask. A butcher who will tell you which cut of meat to buy when two choices look exactly alike. A person who will give you a smile on a crummy day. Oh, and I can go out and be home in less than an hour with the stuff I need.

Are there cranky and/or incompetent salespeople in stores? You bet. And websites malfunction, are often inscrutable and crash once in awhile. Nobody's perfect (not even technology).

So there you have it: in real life, it takes a village to sell merchandise that one or two people can sell online - and that's always going to be messy/ier. Life's not always pretty. Cut your favorite store some slack. Use channels and experiences for what each is good for and don't bother wondering why reading online (or on a Kindle) can't be more like holding a real book - or vice versa. There's room in the universe for both.

* Dear Brandweek: You gave the article I tore out of my subscription copy an entirely different title on your website, thereby making it easier for me to find in the physical world than the online one. Go figure.

Which LCD TV to Buy

This is the often repeated asked question every time another consumer decides to buy a brand new television. There is no clear cut answer because of the many factors that have to be considered. And you have to take them one by one.

Budget
How much are you willing to spend? The amount will determine the size of the television as well as its brand whether it is a Sony, Samsung, Toshiba, Panasonic, and so on and so forth. After you have come up with the amount, screen size is the next thing that you have to contemplate.

Screen Size
Screen size is usually determine by your viewing distance from the television. There is a definite size for some viewing distance but opinions differ as to which is the correct one. Suffice it to say that viewing distance is just a matter of personal preference in my opinion.

Plasma or LCD
The choice is dependent upon the area as to where the tv will be located. If the room has more light and has many windows, then lcd will be your choice. But if the room is dark or has very little lighting, there's no doubt that plasma will be the right one. The reason for this is that the plasma screen is very susceptible to reflection glare when there is enough light in the room. The same cannot be said for lcd tv screen.

Resolution
720p or 1080p? Generally, if your screen size is 32" and below, 720p will be enough but there are those who will be using blu ray players so, 1080p deserves some serious consideration. In plasma though, the difference will only be apparent if the size of the screen is beyond 50".

Refresh Rate
60Hz, 120Hz, or 240Hz? It depends entirely on the budget since the higher the number, the more expensive the unit will be. Many who have those swear that there is not much difference between 120Hz and 240Hz, but there is a considerable distinction between 60Hz and 120Hz. Gamers prefer the 120Hz refresh rate because it reduces blurring on the screen during fast action scenes.

There are other minor factors like fast response time and viewing angles that you can do away with since they are not that serious and will not factor in so much with the decision. But after reading this, you will now have an idea as to which LCD TV to buy.

You are having a hard time choosing the right TV for your budget because you have no idea of the best LCD TV right now, but knowing which are the current television bestsellers, that will help solve your problem.

The Quickest Way to Make Money Online - The Only True Reliable Way to Guarantee You Will Make Money

The purpose of this article is to show you to quickest way to the money online. Noticed I didn't say to make money, I said quickest way to the money, there are a few different ways to make money online however this is all about the only true way to the money.

Think about this for a moment, every single day hundreds of thousands, even millions or transactions are made over the internet every day. Every day people flock to ebay and Amazon to buy products, not to mention all the other shopping sites online.

So What's My Point?

The easiest way and quickest way to make money online is to sell what people are already buying. I know this may sound over simplistic however when people first start out to sell products online or offline for that matter what they tend to do is try and sell what they think other people want or what they think other people are going to like and buy. This is a fatal mistake.

So How Do You Know What People Are Already Buying.

Amazon is the largest online store and it is one of the best places to do market research. What you want to do is pick a category that you like and search though the bestsellers section. In this section you will find all the products in your chosen category that are selling the best. This is a great way to discover what people are already buying.

But Here Is The Fastest Way To The Money

Now, there is even a quicker way to the money, in a lot of the categories when you are searching the bestsellers you will notice a link on the left hand side that says 'movers & shakers' if you click on that link Amazon will show you what products are selling the fastest.

You see people are going to buy these products either way, why not put your affiliate link in front of them so you earn the commission.

If you don't know what I mean by affiliate link you can become a partner or an associate or Amazon and when someone visits Amazon though the special link they provide you and buy something Amazon will pay you a percentage of the sale.
