Book Review - The Tipping Point

"The Tipping Point" by Malcolm Gladwell which was published by Little, brown and company is one of the best books that I have read in a decade.  The author who is a writer for The New Yorker magazine also wrote "Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking".

One of the things that captivated me with this book was the excellent writing style which is combined with good research and interesting stories to support the thesis.

Mr. Gladwell challenges the reader to think about things that make a difference when it comes to expertise.  He describes modern-day phenomena that explain what he terms "laws" that affect the way that our social world behaves.  At the same time, he links these ideas to the way that people's thinking is changed when is comes to seeing products or disseminating ideas because of specific occurrences that might be overlooked which become the "tipping point" that throws a commonplace event into a strong fad or marketing event.

Perhaps the author's words best describe this book. He states "The Tipping Point" is the biography of an idea, and the idea is very simple.  It is that the best way to understand the emergence of fashion trends, the ebb and flow of crime waves, or for that matter, the transformation of unknown books into bestsellers, or the rise of teenage smoking, or the phenomena of word of mouth, or any number of the other mysterious changes that mark everyday life is to think of them as epidemics.  Ideas and product and messages and behaviors spread just like viruses do."

When you decide to start reading this book, I hope you will not have other plans because you will not want to put it down until you come to the very last page.

Amazon Kindle Review

The evolution of paper has given me no choice but to provide readers with an Amazon Kindle review. The mediums which we use to read and write have evolved from stone walls, to papyrus and eventually to paper. In recent years this evolutionary process has stepped into the digital environment and the Amazon Kindle is at the forefront of this technological development. Critics have always reviewed books by only giving regard to the print while ignoring the paper. This will be a review of the modern version of paper by paying particular attention to Amazon's Kindle.

What is the Amazon Kindle?

The Amazon Kindle is an ebook reader which allows the owner to read a digital version of magazines, newspapers or books. The Kindle was first released by Amazon in 2007 and there have been two major models released since the original. Each new Kindle has been altered and improved to make the reading experience more authentic and comfortable. The latest model is the Kindle DX and it offers a range of features which previous models did not offer.

How do I use the Kindle?

Books or newspapers are downloaded directly onto the Kindle through Amazon's Whispernet network. The download is free of charge and the only cost involved is with regard to the book that you select to buy. When a text has been selected it is transferred onto the Kindle immediately. Amazon's Kindle has made it possible to buy a bestseller from the comfort of your couch at home.

How many books are available in Kindle format?

There are over 600,000 ebooks available for the Amazon Kindle. The titles range from classics (which are sometimes offered free of charge) to modern bestsellers. Bestsellers often go for far less than the paperback equivalent, making the Kindle a profitable purchase for the avid reader.

How many books can I store on a Kindle?

The Kindle 2 can store approximately 1,500 books whereas the DX is capable of holding more than 3,000 texts. Until now, it was unfathomable to carry 3,000 reading options with you at a given time. The Kindle is a slim, neat electronic library already owned by over 3,000,000 people, and the list of new owners grows daily.

How much does it cost?

Any Amazon Kindle review would be incomplete without reference to the price of the device. The Kindle 2 is currently available for $189 and you can pick up the Kindle DX for $379. Amazon has always offered used options and these go for much cheaper. People have been buying second-hand books for generations and there is no reason why this tradition can't be carried into the digital age.

Reading has shifted from paper to the digital environment. Old piles of dusty books are being replaced by reading platforms like the Kindle. The modern residential library does not require an entire room; it doesn't even require the space that a single book would normally take up. The pastime of reading has shifted to a digital environment most evidently present in platforms like Amazon's Kindle range.
